President Names New National Intelligence Director
By: David Shepherd [dshepherd@wtwo.com] – Sunday, June 6, 2010
President Barack Obama nominated retired Air Force Lt. Gen. James Clapper to be the new director of national intelligence.
Clapper, who retired in 1995 after 32 years in the service, has been the top Pentagon intelligence official, will replace Dennis Blair, who resigned last month.
If confirmed, Clapper will be the fourth DNI in the last 5 years. The position was created after the 9/11 attacks as a way to coordinate and oversee the 16 agencies in the nation’s intelligence community.

Severe damage has been reported on the ground near Kankakee, Ill, apparently caused by a tornado.
BP Makes Some Progress
By: David Shepherd [dshepherd@wtwo.com] – Sunday, June 6, 2010
BP says they are pleased with its operation Saturday to funnel oil from the ruptured well to a ship a mile above the Gulf of Mexico.
BP’s Senior Vice President, Bob Fryar, says 250,000 gallons of oil has been contained in the first 24 hours of work.
Fryar told NBC News, “That operation has gone extremely well. We are very pleased.”
While crude is still pouring into the Gulf, Saturday’s efforts are at least a step in the right direction (after one failed attempt after another). A permanent and total fix isn’t expected to be ready until August.
Some experts fear hurricanes could interrupt efforts as meteorologists predict a “very active” hurricane season.
A hurricane in the Gulf could spell disaster for BP’s cleanup efforts while wreaking havoc on coastal areas. Some experts think a hurricane could help disperse some of the oil. But others fear a hurricane’s powerful storm surge could push large amounts of oil inland, covering everything it touches. Cleaning up a mess of that magnitude could take years and cost millions of dollars.
IN Minister Faces More Abuse Charges
By: David Shepherd [dshepherd@wtwo.com] – Sunday, June 6, 2010
An Indiana minister, out on bail awaiting child seduction trial, is arrested again after more people come forward claiming abuse.
Randell Vandeventer, a chaplain at Greene County General Hospital in western Indiana, is facing 5 counts of child molestation and 1 count of attempted child molestation, in addition to the child seduction charge he was already facing.
A spokesperson for the Greene County Sheriff’s Department says more alleged victims came forward after seeing media reports of Vandeventer’s first arrest.
According to court documents, a foreign exchange student, staying with Vandeventer and his wife, allege the chaplain touched him inappropriately on several occasions.
Police say these new charges may be connected to a home-based daycare the Vandeventer family runs
WTWO NBC 2 News will continue to follow this story. I’ll head to Greene County Monday to get the latest on this story.
